Description
Greyspace is the crystal sphere that contains the world of Oerth and its surrounding celestial system within the Prime Material Plane. Unlike most known spheres, Greyspace is geocentric, with Oerth at the centre and all other celestial bodiesâincluding its sunâorbiting it.
Encased within a crystal shell suspended in the phlogiston, Greyspace contains a diverse array of celestial bodies, including spherical planets, irregular worlds, asteroid clusters, and even flatworlds.
To spelljammers, Greyspace is considered both stable and strange: a relatively navigable sphere, yet filled with unusual cosmological phenomena and unpredictable hazards.
Star System Details
Oerth (Primary)
At the centre of Greyspace lies Oerth, the system primary. All other celestial bodies orbit this world, making it both physically and culturally the heart of the sphere.
Oerth is the most populated and influential world in the system, and the origin point for most spelljamming activity.
Kule (Celene)
One of Oerthâs moons, Kule is a barren, tidally locked earth body with no atmosphere. It is often associated with elven influence and ancient secrets.
Raenei (Luna)
The second moon of Oerth, Raenei is larger and more varied than Kule. It plays a significant role in navigation and celestial cycles.
Liga (The Sun)
Liga is the systemâs sunâbut crucially, it orbits Oerth rather than the reverse.
A massive fire body, Liga burns with a golden radiance and contains unusual elemental phenomena, including regions sustained by portals to the Elemental Plane of Water.
It completes its orbit in approximately one Oerth year (364 days), defining the systemâs seasonal cycle.
The Grinder
A vast asteroid field orbiting Oerth, the Grinder is composed of countless bodies of varying size and composition. It is a major hazard to navigation and a haven for pirates and hidden outposts.
Edill & Gnibile
These massive air worlds are composed primarily of dense atmospheres rather than solid surfaces. They are inhospitable to most conventional life, though they may harbour strange aerial ecosystems.
Conatha
An elliptical water world, Conatha is a rare and unusual body whose structure defies typical planetary expectations.
Ginsel
A crescent-shaped earth body with an irregular form, Ginsel is one of the more visually striking objects in Greyspace.
Borka & Greela
These are asteroid clusters rather than single planets. Their bodies share common atmospheres and gravity fields, allowing for unusual forms of habitation across multiple connected asteroids.
The Spectre (The Wink)
A flatworldâa rarity even in wildspaceâthe Spectre defies conventional planetary structure and lies in the outer reaches of the system.
Additional Astronomical Features
The Sisters
A cluster of star-like objects that appear as a single star from Oerth. They generate a dead-magic zone and are known to displace travellers through space and time.
The Great Sargasso
A vast drifting region of dead magic that can trap ships and render magical travel impossible.
The Dark Stars
Mysterious black spheres that are said to annihilate anything that comes into contact with them.
The Habitat
An enormous and enigmatic structure of unknown origin, speculated to be either artificial or the result of ancient natural processes.
The Crystal Sphere
Greyspaceâs crystal shell is vast and visually distinctive, often described as resembling an immense iridescent pearl when viewed from the phlogiston.
The âstarsâ visible from Oerth are not distant suns, but enormous gemstones embedded within the inner surface of the sphere, emitting a steady, cold light.
Portals through the sphere open infrequently and unpredictably, making travel into and out of Greyspace more restricted than in some other spheres.
History
Greyspaceâs unusual structure has profoundly influenced the cosmology of Oerthâs inhabitants. Many cultures believe their world to be at the center of the universeâa rare case where belief aligns with reality.
The system has long served as a hub for spelljamming activity, with trade, exploration, and conflict centred around Oerth and its orbital bodies.
Despite its relative stability, Greyspace remains a place of mystery. Ancient constructs, magical anomalies, and unexplored regions continue to challenge even the most experienced spacefarers.
