Description

The Dead Language Society is devoted to the study, preservation, and occasional reconstruction of ancient and forgotten languages. Members work with fragmented texts, enchanted inscriptions, and relics whose meanings have been lost to time, piecing together linguistic puzzles that often hold magical significance.
Their work goes far beyond translation. Many spells, wards, and magical artefacts rely on precise phrasing in archaic tongues, making the Society an invaluable—if sometimes overlooked—resource within the Academy. It is not uncommon for members to be called upon by faculty or fellow students when dealing with ruins, cursed objects, or mysterious writings.
Meetings are equal parts academic and experimental, with students debating interpretations, reconstructing grammar, and occasionally attempting to speak languages that have not been heard aloud for centuries—sometimes with unpredictable results.

Membership

Students may join the Dead Language Society by signing up during the Freshers Fair or at any time upon request.
The Society welcomes students of all skill levels, from complete beginners to accomplished linguists. New members are often introduced through guided translation exercises and collaborative projects, while more experienced members may take on independent research or assist in ongoing investigations.
Participation ranges from casual attendance at meetings to deep involvement in long-term translation efforts, with some members earning recognition from faculty for particularly significant discoveries.
