Relationships System
Overview
Relationships represent how your character connects with student NPCs over time.
You track this using Relationship Points (RP). These reflect friendship, rivalry, trust, and personal history.
Relationships grow through:
- Conversations
- Shared activities
- Guild work
- Story events
- Player choices
Relationship Points (RP)
All NPC relationships begin at:
- 0 RP = Neutral Acquaintance
Each meaningful interaction changes RP by: - +1 RP = positive interaction
- -1 RP = negative interaction
The DM may adjust this for major story moments (±2 or more for significant events).
Relationship States
Friend (5+ RP)
An NPC becomes a Friend when their RP reaches the friendship threshold.
Effects:
- You gain a Bond Boon from that NPC
- The Boon provides a small narrative or mechanical benefit when relevant
- The effect is active as long as they remain your Friend
Rival (-5 RP or lower)
An NPC becomes a Rival when their RP reaches the rivalry threshold.
Effects:
- You gain a Bond Bane from that NPC
- The Bane creates complications or disadvantages when interacting with them
- The effect is active as long as they remain your Rival
Neutral (between -4 and +4 RP)
- Between your friendship and rivalry thresholds
- No mechanical effects
- Most relationships start here
Changing Relationship Thresholds
Your Student Skill Points (Popularity) can change how easily you form Friends or Rivals.
Base Thresholds
Friend: +5 RP
Rival: -5 RP
Popularity Adjustments
For every point of Popularity above 2:
- Friendship threshold lowers by 2 RP
- Rivalry threshold becomes more extreme by +2 RP
Example
If your Popularity is 4:
- Friendship threshold becomes +1 RP
- Rivalry threshold becomes -9 RP
This means: - You become Friends more easily
- You become Rivals less easily
How Relationship Points Change
You gain or lose RP through:
- Conversations and roleplay
- Working together in clubs, guilds, or jobs
- Helping or hindering NPCs
- Exam and study interactions
- Story decisions
Beloveds
Becoming Beloveds
If you have:
- 10 RP or more with a Friend
- You may choose to deepen the relationship during a Relationship Encounter and become Beloveds.
- This occurs in addition to any normal interaction during that encounter.
Beloved Inspiration
If you have one or more Beloveds:
- You gain Beloved Inspiration at the end of each long rest
- Beloved Inspiration works like normal Inspiration (Player’s Handbook rules)
- You regain a number of uses of Beloved Inspiration each long rest equal to your number of Beloveds
- You cannot have more uses than your proficiency bonus
Ending Beloved Relationships
You may end a Beloved Relationship at any time.
When you do:
- The NPC stops granting Beloved Inspiration
- They remain in your relationship system at their current RP
- Their status reverts to Friend (if RP is still 5+)
Bonds
Bond Boons (Friends)
When someone becomes your Friend, you gain a Bond Boon from them.
These can include:
- Small bonuses to specific skill checks involving them
- Help during relevant story moments
- Access to favours, advice, or assistance
- Narrative advantages tied to your relationship
Bond Banes (Rivals)
When someone becomes your Rival, you gain a Bond Bane from them.
These can include:
- Disadvantage in interactions with them
- Increased difficulty when competing against them
- Social or narrative complications
- Obstruction in shared situations
