Description
Deep within the Neverwinter Woods, far beyond the safer, charted paths, lies a hidden complex known among a select few as the Xvart Ritual Dungeon. It is not marked on any official map, and those who stumble upon it rarely do so by accident. The entrance is concealed beneath tangled roots and collapsed stone, half-swallowed by the forest floor, as though the woods themselves are attempting to bury it.
The dungeon appears to predate the current presence of xvarts in the region. Its architecture is crude in places but built atop something far older—cyclopean stonework etched with worn, unfamiliar sigils that hum faintly with residual magic. The xvarts have claimed the site as their own, repurposing its chambers into a network of shrines, traps, and ritual spaces dedicated to their strange and often chaotic practices.
Flickering torchlight and guttering braziers illuminate the interior, casting long, distorted shadows across damp stone walls. Crude idols made from bone, scrap metal, and scavenged relics line the corridors, many of them daubed with pigments that seem to shift colour when not directly observed. The deeper chambers grow increasingly oppressive, thick with the scent of damp earth, smoke, and something faintly metallic.
At the heart of the dungeon lies a central ritual chamber, where the xvarts conduct their most significant ceremonies. Arcane markings cover the floor in overlapping layers, suggesting repeated use over a long period of time. These rituals are poorly understood, but evidence suggests they involve attempts to commune with or draw power from a greater entity—whether real or imagined remains unclear. The magic here is unstable, occasionally manifesting in unpredictable surges that warp light, sound, or even the behaviour of creatures within the space.
Despite its crude occupants, the dungeon is not without structure or purpose. Guards are posted at key junctions, and certain pathways are deliberately collapsed or trapped to deter intrusion. It is both a lair and a place of reverence, where the xvarts gather not just to survive, but to enact something they believe is important.
For Neverwood scholars, the Xvart Ritual Dungeon represents both a threat and an opportunity. It is a rare convergence of primitive ritual magic and ancient arcane architecture, offering insight into how lesser creatures adapt and reinterpret magical spaces. However, any expedition into its depths carries significant risk—not only from its inhabitants, but from whatever lingering power still sleeps beneath its foundations.
