Description
The Ethereal Plane is a mist-shrouded transitive dimension that exists alongside the Material Plane and serves as a conduit between it and other realms of existence. It is not a fully separate world, but rather a parallel state of reality that overlaps physical space without fully interacting with it.
It is divided into two primary regions: the Border Ethereal, which mirrors the edges of the Material Plane, and the Deep Ethereal, a featureless expanse of swirling fog connecting distant planes.
Overview
The Ethereal Plane is most commonly used as:
- A passageway between planes of existence
- A hidden layer of reality for traversal and observation
- A boundary space where the material world can be viewed but not normally affected
Structures and terrain from the Material Plane appear as ghostly, muted versions within the Border Ethereal, allowing limited interaction under specific magical conditions.
Physical Properties
- The Ethereal is largely featureless and filled with swirling grey mist
- Movement is fluid and weightless, unaffected by gravity in the conventional sense
- Visibility is restricted to nearby overlapping regions of the Material Plane
- Time passes normally but is difficult to track without reference points
The Border Ethereal overlaps precisely with the Material world, allowing travellers to “step sideways” into it without crossing physical distance.
Planar Adjacency
The Ethereal Plane serves as a bridge between multiple layers of reality:
The Material Plane
The Ethereal directly overlays the Material Plane, allowing limited observation and interaction through magic or planar travel.
The Deep Ethereal
A vast, unstructured expanse connecting to other planes via conduits known as etheric curtains.
Connected Realms
The Ethereal indirectly links to:
- The Astral Plane
- Various Outer Planes via Deep Ethereal conduits
- Elemental and transitive planar intersections
Magic on the Plane
Magic behaves unpredictably within the Ethereal Plane:
- Spells involving force or energy often fail to cross planar boundaries
- Divination effects may extend between Ethereal and Material layers
- Certain teleportation and blink-based effects function more reliably here
The plane is commonly used by spellcasters seeking stealth, reconnaissance, or rapid traversal.
Inhabitants
The Ethereal Plane is sparsely populated compared to the Material Plane.
Common presences include:
- Incorporeal remnants of mortal existence
- Planar travellers using ethereal transit
- Rare native ethereal entities bound to the Deep Ethereal
Most lifeforms from the Material world cannot survive here without magical protection or adaptation.
Cosmological Role
The Ethereal Plane plays a critical role in planar structure:
- Acts as a buffer between Material and other planes
- Enables indirect interaction between distant realms
- Supports magical travel systems and planar theory
It is considered essential to the stability of planar boundaries.
Variations by World
While the Ethereal Plane is consistent across most cosmologies, its behaviour may vary:
- In high-magic worlds, crossings are more frequent and stable
- In low-magic settings, access is rare and often accidental
- Certain worlds exhibit “thin” regions where the Ethereal and Material nearly merge
Planar Travel
Common methods of entering the Ethereal Plane include:
- Spells such as etherealness
- Planar portals or artefacts
- Natural planar rifts or anomalies
- Rare innate abilities or divine intervention
Travel within the Ethereal Plane allows rapid movement across the Material Plane while remaining undetected, making it a favoured route for infiltration and escape.
