Description

Oerth is the central world of Greyspace and the physical and cosmological heart of its crystal sphere. Unlike most planetary systems, Oerth does not orbit a sun; instead, all other celestial bodies—including the sun, Liga—orbit it.
Roughly Earth-sized, Oerth is a world of immense cultural and geographical diversity. It is best known as the setting of the Flanaess, a region rich in history, conflict, and legendary figures. Across its surface lie ancient ruins, powerful nations, and regions still largely unexplored.
Magic and divine influence are deeply embedded in Oerth’s fabric. Gods are active and present through their followers, while arcane study has shaped the rise and fall of civilizations across millennia.

Planet Details

Oerth is approximately Earth-sized, with a comparable circumference and gravity. It rotates on its axis once every 24 hours, creating a standard day-night cycle, while the orbit of Liga defines the year at roughly 364 days.
As the centre of a geocentric system, Oerth remains stationary relative to the other celestial bodies of Greyspace. Its two primary moons, Kule (Celene) and Raenei (Luna), orbit the planet and are visible in its night sky.
The planet features a wide range of climates, from frozen northern wastes to tropical jungles and arid deserts. Seasonal variation is influenced by Liga’s orbit, producing relatively stable but regionally varied weather patterns.
Oerth’s surface is divided between vast oceans and large continental landmasses, though much of the world remains unmapped or poorly understood by its inhabitants.

Continents

Oerth is divided into several major landmasses, though—as with many worlds—the exact definitions and boundaries are debated among scholars.

Flanaess (Eastern Oerik)

The most extensively detailed and widely known region of Oerth, the Flanaess occupies the eastern portion of the continent of Oerik. It is a land of diverse nations, including powerful kingdoms, city-states, and lawless regions.
Notable locations include the Free City of Greyhawk, a major hub of trade and adventure, as well as numerous historically significant regions shaped by war, migration, and magical upheaval.

Oerik (Western Continent)

Oerik is the largest known continent on Oerth, of which the Flanaess forms only a small eastern portion. Much of Oerik remains unexplored or undocumented, with rumours of powerful empires, lost civilizations, and unknown peoples occupying its western reaches.

Hepmonaland

A vast, jungle-covered continent located to the south of the Flanaess. Hepmonaland is home to ancient cultures, dangerous wildlife, and ruins from long-forgotten civilizations. It is largely considered untamed and perilous.

Telchuria

A northern landmass dominated by extreme cold and glacial conditions. Telchuria is sparsely inhabited and poorly understood, often regarded as a frozen wilderness at the edge of the known world.

Other Regions

Additional landmasses and island chains exist across Oerth’s oceans, though many remain undocumented or only partially explored. Sailors’ tales and fragmented maps hint at distant shores, hidden cultures, and unexplored frontiers.

Oceans

Oerth’s surface is dominated by several major oceans, which separate its continents and shape global trade, travel, and climate.

Solnor Ocean

Located east of the Flanaess, the Solnor Ocean stretches into largely uncharted waters. It is known for its vast size and the mysteries said to lie beyond its horizon.

Dramidj Ocean

Found to the west of the Flanaess, the Dramidj Ocean separates it from the greater expanse of Oerik. It is a key route for exploration and speculation regarding the western lands.

Azure Sea

A major inland sea bordered by several prominent nations within the Flanaess. It serves as a vital hub of commerce, diplomacy, and naval power.

Other Waters

Numerous smaller seas, gulfs, and inland bodies of water exist across Oerth, contributing to regional diversity and supporting local civilizations.

History

Oerth possesses a long and complex history shaped by cycles of rise and fall. Ancient empires, such as the Suel Imperium and the Baklunish Empire, once dominated vast regions before being destroyed in catastrophic magical conflicts.
The aftermath of these events reshaped the political and geographical landscape, giving rise to the modern nations of the Flanaess. Migration, war, and cultural exchange have continued to define the world ever since.
Oerth is also closely tied to powerful individuals and entities, including archmages, demigods, and legendary heroes whose actions have left lasting marks on the world.
Despite centuries of exploration, much of Oerth remains unknown, offering endless opportunities for discovery, conflict, and adventure.
