Description
The Moonshae Isles are a rugged and ancient archipelago lying west of Faerûn in the vast expanse of the Trackless Sea. Known for their deep connection to primal magic and druidic traditions, the isles are often described as a place where nature still remembers its first breath.
Here, the land itself is alive with will and memory. Forests whisper, stones hold grudges, and the sea answers to powers older than the gods of men. Civilization exists - but only by the grace of the wild.
The isles are divided between the Ffolk, who honour the Earthmother and live in harmony with nature, and the Northlanders, seafaring raiders descended from Illuskan stock, who carve their strength from conquest and survival.
Geography
The Moonshae Isles consist of dozens of islands, though only a handful are heavily settled.
The largest, Gwynneth, serves as the cultural and political heart of the isles. Rolling green hills, ancient forests, and sacred druidic sites define its landscape. To the north lies Alaron, a land of windswept cliffs and hardy settlements, while Moray is known for its bleak terrain and dangerous coasts.
The isles are frequently shrouded in mist, and many sailors claim that the fog itself is alive with fey influence.
History
The earliest inhabitants of the isles were the Ffolk, guided by the Earthmother and protected by powerful druidic circles. Their civilisation flourished in balance with nature, building sacred groves instead of cities.
This harmony was shattered by the arrival of the Northlanders, who raided and settled across the northern islands. For centuries, conflict defined the region - druidic magic against steel and fire.
Over time, an uneasy balance emerged. The Ffolk retained control of much of Gwynneth, while Northlander kingdoms rose in the north.
Recent years have seen a troubling shift:
- Sacred sites have begun to rot with unnatural corruption
- Fey crossings have grown unstable
- Druids whisper that the Earthmother’s voice is fading
Government
The Moonshaes are not a unified nation, but Gwynneth is ruled by a High King, traditionally chosen from among the Ffolk nobility.
Northlander territories are governed by jarls and warlords, each ruling their own domains with little regard for central authority.
The true power of the isles, however, lies with the Druid Circles, who act as spiritual guardians of the land. When they speak, even kings listen — or suffer the consequences.
Society
Life in the Moonshaes is shaped by the land.
The Ffolk live in small communities, tending the forests and maintaining sacred traditions. They are deeply spiritual, valuing balance, respect, and ancestral memory.
The Northlanders are harsher - warriors, sailors, and raiders who prize strength and honour. Yet even they have begun to adopt elements of the isles’ druidic traditions.
Religion
The dominant faith is that of the Earthmother, a primal force embodying the life of the land itself.
Other deities are worshipped, but often in secondary roles:

- Umberlee (appeased rather than worshipped)
Druids serve as intermediaries between mortals and the Earthmother, maintaining sacred sites and performing ancient rites.
Trade & Resources
The Moonshaes export timber, fish, furs, and rare natural components used in druidic magic.
Trade with the mainland - particularly Waterdeep and Baldur’s Gate - is steady but cautious, as outsiders are often viewed with suspicion.
