Description
The Domains of Dread are a collection of isolated demiplanes bound together within a greater structure embedded in the Shadowfell. Each domain is a self-contained realm shaped by the will and curse of a singular ruler known as a Darklord, whose personal failings and crimes define the nature of the land.
These domains are not naturally formed planes, but rather constructed prisons, drawing fragments of worlds—primarily from the Material Plane - into a closed and controlled cosmological system governed by the enigmatic Dark Powers.
The Domains of Dread function simultaneously as places of existence, punishment, and narrative entrapment, where reality itself reinforces cycles of horror, obsession, and despair.
Cosmological Structure
Demiplanar Composition
The Domains of Dread are not a single continuous plane, but a cluster of discrete domains, each separated by supernatural barriers formed from sentient, reactive mist.
Each domain:
- Exists independently with its own geography and internal logic
- Cannot be traversed freely without passing through the Mists
- Is governed by its own set of metaphysical rules dictated by its Darklord
The Mists
The defining feature of the Domains:
- Act as both barriers and conduits
- Can isolate a domain completely or allow passage between domains
- Are capable of abducting creatures from other planes, particularly the Material Plane
- Obscure distance, direction, and time
The Dark Powers
The unseen entities responsible for the creation and maintenance of the Domains:
- Their nature is unknown and unknowable
- They select and imprison Darklords
- They manipulate reality to ensure continued suffering
- They do not communicate directly, but act through circumstance and control
Planar Traits
Closed Planar System
- Conventional planar travel (to the Astral Plane or other realms) is largely impossible
- Spells that would allow escape typically fail or are redirected
- Each domain can be sealed entirely by its Darklord
Mutable Reality
- Geography, weather, and even history may shift subtly
- Events often repeat in cycles tied to the Darklord’s curse
- The environment reinforces narrative themes (tragedy, horror, obsession)
Magical Distortion
- Divination magic is unreliable or manipulated
- Teleportation is restricted or redirected
- Necromantic and illusion-based magic often function with increased potency
Domain Classification
Domains vary widely in structure and theme, but broadly fall into several categories:
Gothic Domains
- Feudal structures, cursed nobility, decaying civilisations
- Example: Ravenloft
Wilderness Domains
- Dominated by hostile environments and primal threats
- Limited civilisation
Urban Domains
- Dense populations, intrigue, paranoia, and social decay
Surreal Domains
- Reality behaves inconsistently
- Logic and physical laws are unreliable
Inhabitants
Darklords
Each domain is ruled by a single Darklord:
- Bound permanently to their domain
- Granted near-total control within it
- Unable to leave under any circumstances
Their curse typically involves:
- Eternal denial of their greatest desire
- Repetition of past failures
- Awareness of their imprisonment
Domain Populations
- Some inhabitants are original abductees from other worlds
- Others are domain-born, created or altered by the Dark Powers
- Many are unaware of the true nature of their reality
Interaction with Other Planes
The Shadowfell
- The Domains exist within the Shadowfell but are not freely accessible from it
- Share its bleak tone but are more structured and controlled
The Material Plane
- Primary source of new inhabitants
- Individuals may be drawn into the Domains without warning
Other Planes
- Interaction is rare and inconsistent
- Planar boundaries are controlled by the Dark Powers
Planar Travel
Travel within and beyond the Domains is governed by strict rules:
Entry
- Most commonly through involuntary abduction by the Mists
- Rarely through magical anomalies or artefacts
Internal Travel
- Possible between domains via the Mists
- Direction and destination are not guaranteed
Exit
- Almost universally impossible
- May occur only through:
- Fulfilment of specific narrative conditions
- Intervention by powerful external forces
- Rare failures in the Dark Powers’ control
Notable Domains
Cosmological Role
The Domains of Dread occupy a unique position in planar theory:
- A constructed prison system rather than a natural plane
- A closed loop of moral consequence and narrative punishment
- A region where metaphysics are dictated by will and suffering rather than natural law
They represent a fundamental anomaly within the multiverse.
