Backstory

As part of their summer work experience with The Wintershield Watchmen, the students of Neverwood Academy are assigned to street patrol in Neverwinter - a chance to put their academic training to real-world use. What begins as a routine posting takes a dark turn when a man is found dead in an alley, a withered eyeball rolling from his lifeless hand. The dead man is Delvin Fearnehart, an undercover investigator who had been probing cult activity in the city. His sister Kevori, herself a Watchman operative, begs the students to take up where Delvin left off.

The eyeball is more than it appears - it is both a compass and a key, pointing the way to a hidden catacomb entrance in Neverwinter's ruined River District. Within, a sect of worshippers have made their lair, conducting profane experiments to siphon secrets from mortal souls. Their leader, a fanatic named Zalryr, answers to The Whispered One himself. As the students descend deeper, they will find that this is no ordinary work placement - and he is already taking notice.

Objectives

First Day on the Job

• Begin your patrol assignment with the Wintershield Watchmen in Neverwinter
• Respond to a scream in a nearby alley and discover Delvin Fearnehart's body
• Speak with Kevori Fearnehart and learn of the undercover cult investigation
• Examine the desiccated eyeball found in the dead man's hand
• Activate the eyeball compass by speaking the phrase "Hail the Undying"
• Follow the eyeball's directions to the catacomb entrance in the western ruins

Into the Catacombs

• Descend into the western catacombs beneath Neverwinter
• Navigate the flooded chamber - build a makeshift skiff or wade through
• Survive or bypass the creature lurking in the flooded tunnel
• Discover the ghost haunting the Cinerary Rotunda
• Uncover the ghost's identity through clues hidden in the nearby tombs
• Restore the ghost's memories by speaking her name aloud - earn her aid

Deeper Darkness

• Push deeper into the catacombs past sewers and ruined crypts
• Deal with the undead creatures swarming the desecrated crypt
• Optionally rededicate the defiled shrine to Oghma to bring down the undead
• Use the desiccated eyeball to unlock the sealed door deeper in the catacombs

The Cult's Sanctum

• Infiltrate the cult's hidden sanctuary below the sealed door
• Sneak past or subdue the sleeping cultists in their quarters
• Interrogate captured cultists to learn about their leader, their god, and Delvin's fate
• Search the cult's library and uncover the full scope of their experiments

Confronting Zalryr

• Enter the ritual chamber and interrupt Zalryr's soul-siphoning experiment
• Defeat the cultists and shadow entities conjured by the ritual
• Force Zalryr's surrender or defeat him - capturing him alive earns a greater reward
• Witness The Whispered One's apparition and receive his unsettling supernatural gift

Report & Resolution

• Return to the surface with any captives and intelligence gathered
• Report back to The Wintershield Watchmen and Lord Neverember
• Deliver word that other cult sects are still at large in the city
• Collect your reward - and reflect on quite the work placement
