General
Waterdeep, known across Faerûn as the City of Splendors, is the greatest metropolis of the Sword Coast and one of the wealthiest cities in the Realms. Built beneath the shadow of Mount Waterdeep and stretching along the shores of the Sea of Swords, the city serves as a centre of trade, culture, diplomacy, and adventure.
Waterdeep’s streets are crowded with merchants, nobles, sailors, adventurers, scholars, and travellers from every corner of Toril. Though famed for wealth and opportunity, the city also hides countless secrets beneath its polished surface.
Geography
Waterdeep lies on the western coast of Faerûn, roughly midway between Neverwinter and Baldur’s Gate. Its enormous harbour is protected by natural cliffs and guarded by massive defensive walls.
Key landmarks include:
- Mount Waterdeep – towering above the city and concealing the infamous dungeon of Undermountain.
- Undermountain – an immense subterranean labyrinth ruled by the mad mage Halaster Blackcloak.
- Blackstaff Tower – home of the Blackstaff and the city’s magical defenders.
- Castle Waterdeep – military headquarters overlooking the harbour.
History
Waterdeep began as a small trading settlement and gradually grew into the dominant city of the Sword Coast. Over centuries it became renowned for commerce, naval power, and political influence.
The city survived numerous crises, including wars, dragon attacks, magical disasters, and political conspiracies. By the early 16th century DR, Waterdeep remains stable under the leadership of Open Lord Laeral Silverhand, one of the famed Seven Sisters.
Waterdeep’s influence extends far beyond its walls, shaping trade and politics across The North and the wider Sword Coast.
Government
Waterdeep is governed by the Lords of Waterdeep, a secretive council whose identities are largely hidden from the public.
The city’s visible ruler is the Open Lord, currently Laeral Silverhand, who oversees diplomacy and administration. Beneath the Lords operate numerous magistrates, guild officials, and civic institutions responsible for maintaining order.
Waterdeep’s laws are strict but generally fair, and the city maintains one of the most sophisticated legal systems in Faerûn.

- The Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors – licensed arcane spellcasters who support civic defence.
The city’s harbour is heavily fortified, and magical wards protect important locations throughout Waterdeep.
Society
Waterdeep is cosmopolitan even by the standards of the Realms. Humans, elves, dwarves, halflings, dragonborn, tieflings, and countless others live within the city walls.
Citizens value ambition, commerce, and reputation. Wealth and status carry influence, but skilled adventurers and talented artisans can rise quickly through society.
The city is also famous for festivals, theatre, taverns, and public celebrations.
