Backstory

On the 12th of Alturiak, 1509, a magically induced beanstalk was grown on academy grounds without proper authorisation or structural planning. The growth erupted through Kollema Hall, damaging multiple floors, destabilising ward networks, and rendering the building temporarily unsafe for use.
Although no lives were lost, the incident caused significant disruption to classes, displaced faculty offices, and compromised several long-standing protective enchantments woven into the hall’s foundations.
Following a formal disciplinary hearing chaired by Head Teacher Taiva Loreweaver, the responsible students were assigned a Supervised Structural Responsibility Exercise in lieu of expulsion or fines. The intent of the sanction was not punishment, but education: to ensure the students understood the consequences of uncontrolled magic and took direct responsibility for repairing the harm caused.
The project places the students under faculty supervision and forms part of their mandatory Independent Study Period for the remainder of Alturiak.

Objectives

Phase 1: Damage Assessment

Objective: Identify the causes and extent of the damage.

• Examine structural fractures and magical stress points
• Analyse residual beanstalk magic and growth patterns
• Identify failures in existing warding
• Present a clear explanation of what went wrong to supervising faculty

Phase 2: Structural Stabilisation

Objective: Prevent further collapse or magical degradation.

• Brace weakened arches and load-bearing stonework
• Reinforce failing wards and magical supports
• Secure floating debris and unstable lecture fixtures
• Establish temporary supports throughout affected areas

Phase 3: Root Negotiation

Objective: Resolve the beanstalk growth without causing further harm.

• Communicate with or redirect the semi-sentient root system
• Separate plant magic from the academy’s infrastructure
• Prevent damage to archives and lower-level chambers
• Ensure the growth is safely relocated or neutralised

Phase 4: Ward Reconciliation

Objective: Repair and re-harmonise Kollema Hall’s defensive wards.

• Recalibrate damaged ward glyphs
• Placate disrupted protective enchantments
• Restore layered security magic without overwriting original designs
• Confirm wards recognise the hall as stable and occupied once more

Phase 5: Academic Record & Reflection

Objective: Formally document the incident and lessons learned.

• Compile a written or oral report for faculty review
• Explain the causes, risks, and resolution of the incident
• Demonstrate understanding of magical responsibility
• Submit findings to the academy archives
