Description
Overview
The Lords’ Alliance is a coalition of prominent city-states and regional powers across Faerûn, formed to ensure mutual defence, economic stability, and coordinated responses to large-scale threats. It is not a single governing body, but a diplomatic and strategic alliance designed to preserve the independence of its member cities while strengthening their collective influence.
Though often associated with Waterdeep, the alliance extends across the Sword Coast, The North, and the northern and western Heartlands, binding together powerful urban centres through treaties of cooperation rather than enforced rule.
The Alliance exists primarily to counter external threats such as orc invasions, dragon attacks, and destabilising magical or planar events.
Structure & Organisation
The Lords’ Alliance operates as a decentralised council of representatives.
Leadership Structure
- High Lords / City Leaders – Each member city retains full internal sovereignty
- Alliance Council – Diplomatic assembly of appointed representatives
- Field Agents – Operatives conducting intelligence and enforcement missions
There is no single ruler; authority is distributed among participating cities.
Member Cities
Key members include:
- Waterdeep – The most influential political and economic centre
- Baldur’s Gate – Major mercantile power and naval hub
- Neverwinter – Strategic northern port recovering from catastrophe
- Silverymoon – Arcane and cultural stronghold
- Daggerford – Important trade waypoint along the Trade Way
- Mirabar – Mining and trade hub of the North
Membership is fluid; smaller settlements may gain or lose standing based on stability and strategic value.
Duties
The Lords’ Alliance coordinates:
- Regional defence against large-scale threats
- Suppression of piracy and banditry along trade routes
- Diplomatic relations between member states
- Intelligence gathering on hostile factions (including the Zhentarim and cult networks)
- Response to extraplanar or draconic incursions
While not a standing army, the Alliance can rapidly mobilise combined forces when required.
Military & Enforcement
The Alliance relies on:
- City guard contingents from member states
- Mercenary companies contracted for specific operations
- Adventuring parties acting under chartered authority
- Intelligence operatives embedded across Faerûn
Cooperation is often uneven, as each city prioritises its own interests.
Political Influence
The Lords’ Alliance exerts influence through:
- Trade regulation and shared tariffs
- Mutual defence agreements
- Diplomatic pressure on independent realms
- Coordinated responses to magical disasters
Its power is strongest in regions where trade routes converge.
Reputation
- Citizens of member cities: Seen as stabilising but distant
- Independent realms: Viewed with suspicion or pragmatism
- Criminal organisations: A major opposing force
- Adventurers: Often employed as unofficial agents
The Alliance is respected for its stability, but criticised for political infighting and inconsistent enforcement.
