The Chasm

Overview

The Chasm District is Neverwinter’s most visible wound.
When catastrophe tore through the city, a vast rift split this quarter apart, swallowing streets, towers, and entire lives. What remains is a district divided — part stabilised reconstruction, part abandoned ruin, and part open scar that no mason can simply mortar closed.
By 1509 DR, efforts to reclaim sections of the Chasm have begun in earnest. Reinforced bridges now span narrower gaps. Certain outer streets have been cleared and rebuilt. Guard patrols operate along secured perimeters.
Yet at its heart, the Chasm remains a jagged abyss — unstable, dangerous, and deeply wrong.
The district feels quieter than it should.

District Character

Architecture:
Collapsed buildings frozen mid-fall, fractured foundations jutting at unnatural angles, reinforced scaffolding bracing half-saved structures. Newly rebuilt areas sit awkwardly beside sheer drops.
Atmosphere:
Uneasy. Watchful. Even restored sections feel temporary, as though the ground itself is considering another shift.
Common Sounds:

The Chasm Itself

The central rift cuts deep into the earth, disappearing into shadow. Portions of the chasm walls show signs of arcane residue — faint glyphs, scorched stone, and veins of strange mineral growth.
Temporary bridges and reinforced causeways allow limited crossing between stabilised sections, though access to the innermost areas is officially restricted.
Unofficially, adventurers, scavengers, and cultists have all found ways below.

Reconstruction Efforts (1509 DR)

Funding for the project remains politically sensitive, with debates ongoing about whether the Chasm should be fully reclaimed or permanently sealed.
