Dock Ward
General
Location: Neverwinter
Category: Commerce
Overview
The Dock Ward is the restless, salt-stained gateway of Neverwinter. Ships from across the Sword Coast arrive daily, bringing cargo, coin, rumours, and trouble in equal measure. If Protector's Enclave is the city’s face and Blacklake its guarded heart, the Dock Ward is its pulse.
Here, trade happens loudly. Sailors drink hard after long voyages. Warehouses crowd the waterfront. Cranes swing overhead, and gulls circle constantly. The district thrives on movement — of goods, of people, of secrets.
For many visitors, the Dock Ward is their first impression of Neverwinter. It is rarely a quiet one.
District Character
Architecture:
Heavy timber warehouses, rope-laced piers, taverns leaning slightly off-true, and sturdy stone customs buildings. Upper floors often serve as lodging above trade shops.
Atmosphere:
Energetic, volatile, and opportunistic. Deals are struck quickly. Arguments escalate faster. Coin changes hands constantly.
Common Sounds:
- Ship bells and creaking hulls
- Dockworkers shouting over crashing waves
- Tavern music spilling into the streets
- Cargo crates thudding onto stone
Common Smells: - Saltwater and tar
- Fish and brine
- Spiced rum
- Damp rope and seaweed
The Harbour
The harbour waters are busy from dawn until well past midnight. Merchant vessels, fishing boats, and private ships compete for space along the docks. Harbourmasters maintain order — officially.
Unofficially, certain ships dock without paperwork.
Fog rolling in from the Sea of Swords can turn the piers into shifting silhouettes, perfect cover for clandestine meetings.
