Summary
With exams behind them, the first-years are ordered to relax — academically, at least. Professor Sharpbeak’s idea of “unwinding” takes the form of a campus-wide scavenger hunt, sending the students racing across Strixhaven in pursuit of riddles, logic puzzles, and hidden clues. From arches and equations to statues that talk back, the hunt tests both brains and patience. Along the way, Glue reunites with his accidentally-created treant “son,” and the party’s persistence pays off. The trail ends at Neverwood Stadium, where the true reward is revealed — along with proof that the staff have been watching very closely.
The Scavenger Hunt Begins
- In the aftermath of exams, students are instructed to relax and unwind.
- Professor Sharpbeak organises a campus-wide scavenger hunt for all first-year students.
- During class, Professor Fain announces the hunt and hands each group their first clue:
“All arches. No walls.”
- The party deduces the clue points to Archway Commons and departs the Biblioplex.
Archway Commons
- The students scour Archway Commons for hidden clues.
- After some searching, Glue notices that a statue’s plaque has been altered. It now reads:
“Every arch here is decorative. The real work happens where numbers become tools.”
- The group concludes the next destination must be Quandrix Campus.
- After some debate, Cyinth reminds them that Quandrix has a forge, which they decide must be the intended location.
Quandrix Forge
- Upon arriving at the forge, Vigilius spots a new clue written on a chalkboard:
“Three identical conduits.
Total output: 30 units.
Each student solved this in their first week.
Once calculated, it was carved, an effigy to be remembered.” - This clue proves trickier, but the party eventually concludes it must refer to Effigy Row.
- They once again set off across campus, hoping they’re on the right track.
Effigy Row
- The students search Effigy Row but initially find nothing.
- Glue, half-jokingly, addresses one of the statues.
- The first statue does not respond.
- After more fruitless searching, a statue speaks, asking Glue if he’s “looking for the thing the staff left here yesterday.”
- Glue confirms they’re on a scavenger hunt.
- The statue explains it was tasked with keeping the clue safe and directs Glue to the base of its podium.
- There, Glue finds a small numerical keypad.
- After discussion, the party decides the code is either 10 or 30.
- Glue tries 10, opening a hidden compartment and revealing the next clue:
“History may be cultivated, but stone cannot photosynthesise.”
The Cultivarium
- The party heads to The Cultivarium.
- Inside the greenhouse, Glue looks for the treant he accidentally grew several tendays ago.
- Calling out to his “son,” the treant emerges from the flower beds and runs to Glue for a hug.
- After a brief reunion, Glue asks if the treant has seen any staff hiding something.
- The treant directs them to a sign on the far side of the greenhouse, which reads:
“Some things only reveal themselves when many are watching.
The final destination is where people gather, not grow.”
Neverwood Stadium
- After some debate, the party determines the final destination must be Neverwood Stadium.
- Upon arrival, they are greeted by Zoei.
- Zoei congratulates the students on successfully completing the scavenger hunt.
- As a reward, she presents them with a Heward's Handy Haversack.
Ongoing Threads
- Faculty Oversight – The scavenger hunt confirms the staff are closely observing the students’ problem-solving and teamwork.
- Living Statues of Effigy Row – At least some of the statues are sentient and entrusted with Academy secrets.
- Glue’s Treant “Son” – The treant remains alive, affectionate, and integrated into the Cultivarium — with unknown long-term implications.
- Magical Rewards – The Heward’s Handy Haversack is useful, but also marks the group as successful participants.
- Inter-College Collaboration – The hunt pushed students across multiple campuses, reinforcing bonds — and rivalries — between colleges.
