Summary
Stranded above the clouds after the portal closes, Marionette finds herself alone in the giant realm — and unwilling to leave without answers. What begins as a quiet act of survival turns into something far more consequential when she discovers Teanna Aethelos broken and grieving in the ruins of her home. Choosing compassion over caution, Marionette helps Teanna flee an abusive life, shepherding her through a dangerous planar transition that strips the giantess of both her size and her certainty. The journey back to Neverwinter is long, uncomfortable, and emotionally raw — but by its end, Teanna has a future, a name among mortals, and a chance to rebuild. Marionette, true to form, makes it back to the Academy just in time for her exam — carrying far more than she left with.
Trapped in the Cloud Realm
- Marionette watches the portal at the top of the giant beanstalk close, leaving her stranded.
- Unsure of what else to do, she returns to Skyberry House.
- She sneaks inside through an open window and enters the dining room.
- Hearing quiet sobbing, she follows the sound into the kitchen.
Teanna’s Grief
- Marionette finds Teanna Aethelos sitting on the floor, openly crying.
- After taking time to comfort her, Teanna speaks — directly and painfully — about her abusive husband, Aurum Aethelos.
- Marionette expresses deep concern and gently suggests something radical:
- Teanna should leave Aurum.
- She should leave the cloud realm entirely.
- After confirming that Aurum is still distracted in the back garden, Teanna agrees.
- She gathers a small number of belongings.
- Together, they leave Skyberry House and return to the site of the portal.
The Leap
- The portal has reopened.
- Without hesitation, Marionette and Teanna jump through.
- They fall for an impossibly long time.
- Everything fades to black.
A Smaller World
- Marionette awakens in a pile of hay, chilled by a late-winter breeze.
- Teanna is nowhere to be seen.
- When Marionette calls out, a small, naked woman resembling Teanna sits up in a nearby pile of straw.
- The transformation is clear:
- Teanna is no longer a giant.
- Marionette offers her cloak without hesitation.
- Together, they gather themselves and head towards a nearby farm building to seek help.
Blackstone Farm
- They encounter an elderly man asleep on the porch.
- Marionette wakes him and asks where they are.
- He introduces the location as Blackstone Farm, in Gillian’s Hill.
- The man identifies himself as Reynard Blackstone.
- Marionette explains they need to reach Neverwinter.
- Reynard offers them a lift into town, where a coach regularly departs.
- Noticing Teanna’s lack of clothing, Reynard calls for his granddaughter, Adalynn Blackstone.
- Adalynn brings the girls inside and up to her room:
- She helps Teanna find suitable clothes.
- The three begin talking and getting to know one another.
Connections Revealed
- Marionette mentions she attends Neverwood Academy and must return before an upcoming exam.
- Adalynn reveals that her brother, Harry Blackstone, also attends the Academy.
- Marionette realises why Adalynn looks familiar and explains that she knows Harry well.
- Shocked that Harry has friends at all, Adalynn presses for details.
- Marionette shares stories of recent adventures.
- The group — Marionette, Teanna, Adalynn, and Reynard — travel together by cart into town.
The Road to Neverwinter
- They arrive just in time to catch a coach to Neverwinter.
- Reynard negotiates passage with the driver, Alec:
- Cost: 5gp per passenger.
- Marionette pays the fee.
- The girls climb aboard as the coach departs.
The Inn at Night
- After night falls, the coach stops at a small, run-down inn.
- Alec explains that the fare includes:
- Dinner.
- A bed for the night.
- Inside, the inn is cramped and sparsely occupied.
- Marionette buys drinks for herself and Teanna.
- Upstairs, they discover their accommodation is a shared dormitory.
- Unhappy with this, Marionette returns to the innkeep and offers a generous sum.
- Reluctantly, the innkeep offers them his daughters’ private room.
- The girls accept, return downstairs for food, and eventually head to bed.
- Marionette overhears Teanna quietly crying herself to sleep.
A New Beginning
- The next morning, they rejoin the coach and continue onward.
- They arrive in Neverwinter late in the evening.
- Marionette finds a local inn for them to stay in.
- Over the following days:
- Marionette calls in favours from her old thieves’ guild, Myra’s Hand.
- Together, they secure long-term shelter and work for Teanna.
- Confident that Teanna is safe and supported, Marionette says her goodbyes.
- With her exam imminent, she returns to Neverwood Academy just in time to sit her A is for Ankheg exam.
