Cadoras Damellawar, "Professor Delta"
Summary
After the disciplinary summons from the Head Teacher, Harry Blackstone finds himself drawn into a web of mathematical mystery and secret scholarship. What begins as a quiet library shift turns into a clandestine recruitment by The Silent Equation — a mysterious Quandrix circle seeking “balance and correction.” Enticed by both curiosity and coin, Harry follows the formula to its first variable: a meeting in the abandoned observatory and a book that hums with impossible geometry.
A Delivery from The Silent Equation
- While working a late shift in the Biblioplex, Harry’s solitude is interrupted by his ever-irreverent friend, Cadoras, who brings an envelope sealed with a silver ∑ sigil — the mark of The Silent Equation
- The note inside is formal, almost mechanical: an invitation to collaborate on restoring “lost formulae,” with 25 platinum pieces enclosed as a “token of appreciation.”
- Though suspicious, Harry’s curiosity outweighs his caution. He and Cadoras agree to investigate together, arranging to meet at the old observatory by nightfall.
Preparations and Paranoia
- Back in his dorm, Harry prepares for whatever trap may lie ahead. He crafts an “in case I die” letter to Lyra Everlight, entrusting its delivery to one of his automatons should he fail to return within 24 hours.
- With precautions in place and Mage Armour woven around him, Harry steels himself for the meeting — armed with intellect, caution, and mild resignation.
The Meeting at the Observatory
- The ruined observatory stands under fractured glass and moonlight, its walls pulsing faintly with residual warding magic. Cadoras arrives early, the two exchanging nervous jokes before beginning their investigation.
- While Harry searches, a robed figure materialises behind him — a tall scholar wearing a smooth wooden mask painted with the ∑ sigil. He introduces himself as Professor Delta, representative of The Silent Equation.
- Delta’s manner is unnervingly calm, his words precise: “Each theorem conceals a spell — fragments of equilibrium itself. Decode the book and present us with the relevant scrolls.”
- He hands over a tome titled Proofs of Correction, then vanishes in a flare of blue-green light before Harry can respond.
Proofs of Correction
- Cadoras examines the book, baffled by the fractal symbols and shifting runes that rearrange themselves when touched.
- After returning to their dorms, Harry notices the book humming faintly, its title gleaming like etched glass in the dark. Pulling back his automaton and sealing the Lyra letter away once more, he begins his work.
- The text unfolds as a series of logical puzzles and diagrams written in pure magical mathematics. Hours later, with a burst of clarity, Harry deciphers the first formula:
Page I — The Law of Balanced Force
Equations for equal and opposite reactions. Vectors sketched like weapons. When solved, the page hums with restrained kinetic energy.
“Every force seeks its counterpart.” - Carefully, Harry transcribes the theorem into a spell scroll. The page pulses once — as if acknowledging completion — and settles into silence.
Ongoing Threads
- The Silent Equation – Who are these self-styled scholars, and what do they truly seek to “balance”? Their motives remain hidden behind formalities and fractals.
- Professor Delta – A masked envoy whose composure borders on mechanical. His vanishing act suggests mastery over teleportation far beyond the standard campus weave.
- Proofs of Correction – The tome itself is alive with shifting equations, each a potential spell locked behind logic and insight. Harry has solved only the first.
- Lyra’s Letter – A sealed confession of contingency, a rare glimpse at Harry’s vulnerability — and a potential thread should his secret ever surface.
- Cadoras’ Loyalty – His easy humour masks quiet concern. Whether as ally or liability, his involvement in The Silent Equation may yet complicate things.
