Summary
When a mysterious silver-lettered summons arrives at his dorm, Vigilius Palamas finds himself called before the highest authorities of Neverwood Academy to answer for his role in the midnight break-in at the Administration Offices. What begins as a disciplinary hearing soon turns into something more — a test of honesty, character, and redemption — leading to a secret mission that could earn back the professors’ trust… or plunge him deeper into the academy’s mysteries.
The Summons
- A silver envelope slides beneath Vigilius’ door, the seal shimmering with Silverquill magic.
- A voice emanates from the parchment:
“Mr. Palamas, you are requested to attend an immediate disciplinary meeting in the Administration Offices. Please report to the Hall of Inquiry within the hour.” - Knowing resistance would only worsen things, Vigilius heads for the Hall of Inquiry.
- The Administration Wing is eerily quiet — the usual hum of enchanted quills and bustling clerks replaced by silence and the faint ticking of a clock.
The Hall of Inquiry
- A winged silver quill leads Vigilius into a rune-lit chamber where Professor Mavinda Sharpbeak and Deputy Head Teacher Ricard Ruanad await.
- Mavinda gestures to a chair, her expression disappointed but not cruel.
- Ricard, smooth-voiced and precise, opens with:
“No shackles, no detentions — yet. Let’s simply have a conversation.” - Mavinda produces a small crystal vial containing a gold dragon scale, glowing faintly in the lamplight.
- It was found alongside the wreckage of a destroyed security autognome.
- The scale’s magical signature matches Vigilius.
- Ricard leans forward, fingers steepled:
“You can tell us the truth, Vigilius… or, if you prefer, a very convincing story. I do enjoy a good story.”
The Confession
- Weighing his options, Vigilius admits to being in the Administration Offices after hours.
- He explains that he and several fellow first-years had broken in to learn more about a student who was expelled, hoping the information might explain recent strange events. - see 2025-09-06 - Session 9
- He clarifies that the plan wasn’t originally his, though he takes responsibility for following through.
- A natural 20 on Persuasion turns the tide in his favour — his sincerity clearly moves Mavinda.
- When asked to name the others, Vigilius reluctantly lists Lyra Everlight, Cyinth Agora, Harry Blackstone, Milfjord Goodleaf and Glue (surname forgotten).
Judgment and Punishment
- Mavinda’s tone softens.
“You regret it. That counts for something.” - Ricard, ever the pragmatist, decides on a moderate punishment:
- One tenday of probation
- No after-hours access to restricted archives
- As Vigilius leaves, Mavinda offers one last piece of guidance:
“Be honest with yourself. That’s where redemption begins.” - Ricard adds, his voice smooth and deliberate:
“And remember, my boy… secrets are worth far more when they’re yours alone.”
A Second Chance
- Later that evening, Vigilius hears a quiet knock at his door.
- Professor Mavinda Sharpbeak stands outside, feathers dulled by lamplight, holding a sealed parchment.
- “This is not punishment,” she says softly, “but perspective.”
- A Witherbloom College first-year has gone missing near the Root Archives, deep in the old wings of campus.
- She tasks Vigilius to find them alone — no spells, no faculty.
- “Do this,” she says, “and we can put this matter behind us.”
- Vigilius accepts, determined to prove himself worthy of the trust he’s been given.
Ongoing Threads
- Vigilius’ Probation – Restricted from late-night access to archives for one tenday.
- Mavinda’s Task – Investigate the disappearance of a Witherbloom first-year near the Root Archives.
- Expelled Student Mystery – The group’s initial goal remains unresolved.
- Faculty Attention – Both Mavinda and Ricard are now keeping a close watch on Vigilius’ behaviour.
- Secrets and Consequences – Ricard’s warning lingers — in Neverwood, secrets may be more valuable (and dangerous) than gold.
